April Blog

April Service Hours:12 Total: 13 I started off this month volunteering at Hogs for the Cause here in New Orleans. It is a large barbecue festival event put on every year benefitting research for pediatric cancers. The event raised over $2.6 million, and I was honored to be a part of it. Most of the volunteering I did in undergrad was similar in nature and benefitted St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. After that, we spent the next few weeks of class wrapping up the program and it has been very bittersweet. On one hand, I am glad it is over, and I can move on to getting ready for medical school in August, on the other hand, I know I am going to miss Tulane and New Orleans immensely. This was my first time moving out of my home state to a place I didn’t really know anybody, and it has been a very good learning experience. Thinking back on my time here will always bring up fond memories. A few of my friends took Step 1 a few weeks ago and were texting me asking me pharma

March Blog

Service Hours this month: 1 Total Service Hours: 1 March was a very eventful month for me. I started off the month by experiencing my first Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It was nothing like I expected it to be. It was a lot more family friendly that I was expecting. I had a few friends in town and we watched all the parades from a street corner on St. Charles. We also went to our first Tulane baseball game. Baseball was a huge part of my undergraduate experience, and I was happy to be able to go to a game here. I have also made plans to volunteer with Hogs for the Cause this weekend. It is a large barbecue festival that is also a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research. It is very similar to the volunteering I did in undergrad. I spent over 100 hours volunteering with different fundraising events for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As far of classes go, Principles came to an end and that was the first sign of the semester and my time in New Orleans coming to an end. I also finish

February Blog

This month, we focused on pain medications and reproductive medications mainly. I thought it was extremely interesting to learn about most of the reproductive lessons because that is not something that I really had much experience with before. I really had not realized how much of a decision-making process there is when women are choosing what birth control to go on. I talked to my girlfriend at the end of the module, and she was able to educate me more about the stress that goes into figuring out which pill is right for you as well as the early age some women start them for other reasons.  Mardi Gras season has really been kicked into high gear lately and it has been a lot of fun watching the city really come to life with celebration. It is my first Mardi Gras season in New Orleans, and it is unlike anything I expected. So far, my favorite parade has been Krewe Du Vieux. I really thought it was great that there was a parade for the people to air their grievances with anything from ci

January Blog

January started off as a very stressful month. At the end of last semester, I was having to move out of my apartment because of a bad landlord. I started the year being sick from being in the city on New Year’s Eve. I had only a few days to recover and get moved into my new apartment in the city. I can already tell it will be a much better living situation than previously, my dog really seems to enjoy it much more. Because of all this stress, I was almost thankful that we were Zoom only until February. It gave me a lot of time to recover and get ready to start back school and get in the right headspace. I was very excited to get started with our new electives this semester. I am particularly interested in the Environmental and Endocrine electives. I remained at home until the last weekend in January and it was nice getting to spend more time with my family since I had not gotten to see them a lot, but I am ready to see all my classmates soon. I did not do any community service this mon

December Blog

Service Hours Total: 12 The semester came to a very stressful end for me on Tuesday. Over the weekend, I started feeling bad, running a fever, and just being generally nauseous. Because of this, I wasn’t able study fully for our finals on Tuesday. I managed to get a day of studying in before taking the test, which I was thankful for. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, which I was not exactly happy about, but it could have been worse. I also found out at the end of this that it is possible to delay an exam due to illness, which will not help me now, but I will be sure to remember for the future. It is behind me now so I am moving on to next semester. December is always an exciting time for me. I normally do lots of travelling and see all of my friends that I don’t normally get to see. This was no different for this year, so far. A few weeks ago, my brother told me he bought a new puppy for his girlfriend and was going to have to have it shipped from Maine to North Carolina. After I l

November Blog

Service hours: 4 Total: 12 This month, the module that stood out the most to me was the cardiology section. I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed it, and that showed through in my grades. After we had those lectures, I read more into the field of cardiology, and it is something that I could see myself wanting to practice in the future. One of the things I did to investigate it was listen to “Specialty Stories,” which is a podcast by Dr. Ryan Gray. In one of the episodes he was talking to a pediatric congenital heart surgeon and I was fascinated the entire time. In another episode, he talked to a Med-Peds physician, trained by Tulane, which I found even more interesting considering I could do that, and then do a cardiology fellowship after and be triple boarded. This is the most excited I have been about something since my acceptance. Speaking of, I did not hear anything from any of the school I applied to, during the month of November and I am starting to get a little concerned.

October 2021

I returned to New Orleans at the end of September/beginning of October. After not having more than a week of in-person classes since early Spring 2020, I came to the realization that I really preferred online lectures rather than in-person ones. I started to feel as if I couldn’t pay attention as well in in-person classes and I don’t know why this is. Perhaps it is because when I am watching the lecture on my laptop, I can pause to finish writing a not or rewind if I think I missed something. Either way, I have been trying keep my attention focused on the lecture while I am present in class and I am doing a better job at it, but it is hard after not being in class for so long. I have also noticed my study habits are not sufficient to perform at a level that I am used to performing at. I am trying different strategies with varying success, but I believe I have found the best way. In the middle of October, I was also accepted to the University of Mississippi Medical School. I was ve
